The Dakotas have a strong tradition of supplying our military with the tools they need -- our goal is to help continue and expand that tradition. The Dakota Defense Alliance will raise the visibility of our defense-related manufacturers with the prime government contractors, increase their awareness of RFP opportunities coming out of DoD, and help facilitate collaboration on complementary objectives. The alliance will be a networking venue for businesses, particularly small and medium-sized manufacturers, in the Dakotas.

Classification Codes

CAGE Code (Commercial and Government Agency Code)
Any entity doing business through the CCR Registry must obtain a CAGE code.

NAICS Codes (North American Industry Classification System)
The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) has replaced the U.S. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. NAICS will reshape the way we view our changing economy. NAICS was developed jointly by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to provide new comparability in statistics about business activity across North America. Most government agencies require a NAICS or SIC code for product or service identification.

SIC Codes (Standard Industrial Classification Codes)
The SIC coding system was replaced by the NAICS, but many agencies still utilize this classification system.

PSC Code (Product Service Code)
PSC's are categorizations of what the U.S. Government buys. They consist of:

  • Federal Supply Classification Codes (FSC) for commodities.
  • Research and Development codes cover all aspects of research, development, and evaluation (including management and support).
  • Services include all other non-tangible services and purchase or lease of buildings.
  1. Federal Supply Class or FSC Code
The FSC Code is the most general description. It is a 4-digit number that is assigned based on end use. Therefore, it is possible for the same item to have more than one FSC Code if it is commonly used for more than one purpose.

  2. National Item Identification Number or NIIN
The NIIN is the most detailed, as it identifies the specific item. It is a 9-digit number that when combined with the FSC Code provides (3) the National Stock Number or NSN.

Harmonized Tariff Codes
This is a code, assigned by the US government department of Census to all products. This code is required to ship product oversees. Your product may not be listed EXACTLY, but you must get as close as possible.

Dunn and Bradstreet Number (DUNS Number)
Getting a D&B D-U-N-S Number for your business is the first step in establishing your business credit file. Many companies rely on D&B for this information to assess creditworthiness before making critical decisions about your business. Many public and private entities utilize this number to view your companies credit history, similar to TRW or Equifax. It is FREE to establish a DUNS number, but D&B will usually call and solicit a more advanced "membership", you do not need to do so to establish and keep a DUNS number.
